Accessibility Policy

Rae Huang for Mayor 2026 is dedicated to ensuring that persons with disabilities have a full and equal opportunity to access the content offered on raeforla.com. We are committed to the principles of inclusion and equal access for all, and we continue to improve the accessibility of this website so that it meets W3C's Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA conformance.

If you are having trouble accessing content on raeforla.com using a screen reader or other assistive technology, please email us at info@raeforla.com for assistance.

What We Have Done

We have implemented a number of features to make this site more accessible:

  • Semantic HTML landmarks — every page uses <main>, <nav>, <section>, and <footer> to give screen reader users clear navigation landmarks.
  • Skip to main content — a keyboard-visible skip link is the very first focusable element on every page, letting keyboard and screen reader users jump past repeated navigation.
  • Keyboard navigability — all interactive elements (links, buttons, dropdowns, accordions, forms) are fully reachable and operable by keyboard alone, with a clear Tab order.
  • Visible focus indicators — all focusable elements display a high-visibility focus ring (3px solid accent-color outline) when navigated via keyboard.
  • ARIA attributes — navigation, mobile menu, dropdowns, accordions, maps, forms, and interactive widgets are annotated with aria-label, aria-expanded, aria-controls, role, and related attributes to communicate state and purpose to assistive technologies.
  • Form accessibility — all form inputs have associated labels and validation errors are announced via role="alert".
  • Descriptive image alt text — all images carry meaningful alt attributes; purely decorative images use empty alt text to be ignored by screen readers.
  • SVG maps with labels — interactive neighborhood and campaign stop maps are annotated with descriptive aria-label and role="img".
  • Live regions — dynamically updated content (such as the endorsements ticker) uses aria-live="polite" so screen readers announce changes automatically.
  • Reduced-motion support — scroll-reveal animations and transitions are disabled both when the user’s OS has prefers-reduced-motion set and via our on-site accessibility widget.
  • Language of page — the primary language is declared as lang="en" on the HTML element. The site is available in English, Spanish, Korean, Japanese, Thai, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese.

Accessibility Widget

Every page includes an on-screen Accessibility Widget (the circular icon in the bottom-right corner) that lets you customize your experience without changing your system settings. Options include:

  • High contrast — strengthens color contrast across all sections for easier reading.
  • Larger text — increases the base font size site-wide.
  • Underline links — always underlines hyperlinks for easier visual identification.
  • Reduce motion — disables scroll-triggered animations and transitions. Preferences are saved in your browser.

Ongoing Work

We recognize that accessibility is an ongoing practice, not a one-time checklist. We are actively working toward full WCAG 2.1 Level AA conformance across all pages. Known areas under active improvement include:

  • Enhanced keyboard navigation for interactive SVG map elements (individual neighborhood pins and campaign stop markers).
  • Expanded language support and translation coverage for all page content.
